Cheng Style Tai Chi Form
Introduction
We often refer to this form as ‘Short Yang’ or ‘Yang 37’, but I have given up trying to count the moves or postures and to get them to reconcile to this number.
From my earlier article linked below:
Wutan’s ‘Yang’ short form is actually derived from a form created by Cheng Man-ch’ing ( or Zheng Manqing) and he is sometimes referred to as ‘CMC’ (link), who studied with Yang Chengfu for a number of years.
The Yang family has not endorsed Cheng’s adaptation. Accordingly, I will reference this form as the Cheng style Tai Chi form (not to be confused with ‘Chen’ Tai Chi).
The form is broken into six sections…
Opening section
Brush knee pushes
Repulse monkeys & cloud hands
Kick section
Fair lady works at shuttles (‘Four corners’)
Seven stars of the dipper (‘Seven star fist’)
The Form as described here is not intended to substitute for instruction by an experienced teacher, but is presented as an aide memoire for students learning the form or seeking a refresher. There is no intent here to describe application, for example, in self defence.

Notes
There is a repeating section in this form often referred to as ‘grasp the bird’s / sparrow’s tail’, we sometimes call it the ‘chorus’. I am using the alternative and equally valid phrase ‘Ward Off, Roll Back, Press, Push (Peng, Lu, Ji, An)’. For more on this, see the following article, bearing in mind it is in the Chen family style and not Yang - https://www.blackwatertaichi.com/blog/peng-lu-ji-an
A full set of pictures illustrating this set can be found in ‘Tai Chi, The Treasure of Mankind’ published in 1997 by Master They Soon Tuan, the head of Wutan UK
